A calmer mind – a fuller life.
Dr Nicholas Giles is a specialist psychiatrist practising in Claremont, Cape Town,
working with adult patients across the full range of psychiatric conditions.
Dr Giles completed his MBChB at the University of Cape Town. He went on to complete two years of internship in Pietermaritzburg, followed by a year of community service across Cape Town's clinics and emergency centres.
He then spent three years as a medical officer in emergency medicine, during which he completed his Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (DipPEC). It was during this period that his focus shifted toward psychiatry, a field he describes as his true calling.
He went on to spend three years as a medical officer in psychiatry at Valkenberg Hospital. He then completed his registrarship in psychiatry at the University of Cape Town from 2022 to January 2026, before qualifying as a specialist. This grounding in general and emergency medicine, ahead of specialising in psychiatry, gives Dr Giles a broad clinical perspective that continues to shape how he assesses and treats his patients today.
Dr Giles is now a specialist psychiatrist in private practice. He has admitting rights to Akeso Hospitals and Crescent Clinic if a period of inpatient treatment is needed.
Dr Giles is passionate about the holistic care that psychiatry embraces. He works to support each patient on their own path toward wellbeing.
His approach combines evidence-based treatment with an open-minded, patient-centred and collaborative style of care. Rather than working from a fixed checklist, he aims to get to know each person thoroughly, using a comprehensive consultation technique, before finding the right path toward healing and long-term mental health. Dr Giles is comfortable managing the full range of psychiatric diagnoses and treats adult patients aged 18 and older.
